University police in riot gear cleared out a 50-person, Pro-Palestinian encampment Tuesday on the University of Michigan Diag, MLive reports.
Officers were on scene to sweep the encampment as early as 5:45 a.m., MLive reports, citing the student organization Tahrir Coalition, which is behind the protests.
Protesters posted video showing officers using pepper spray while pushing the crowd toward North University Avenue away from the Diag, MLive reports.
University President Santa Ono said the sweep came after the university fire marshal determined protesters had created fire hazards that would result in a likely “catastrophic loss of life” should a fire break out.
