Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson.

As expected, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who previously served as dead of Wayne State University Law School, announced Wednesday that she's running as a Democrat for governor of Michigan.

"I’m running to be Governor of Michigan to ensure everyone gets a fair shot," she said on X. "I'm a mom, military spouse, educator — and Michigan’s Secretary of State.

'I’ve never backed down from a tough fight or hard work. And I know together we can build the future Michiganders deserve."

Other Democrats are expected to join the race including Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II. Some have been trying to convince Gilchrist to run for mayor of Detroit, but political talk is that he's set on running for governor.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a Democrat, has announced that he's running as an Independent. Aric Nesbitt, the Michigan Senate Republican leader, has also announced he's running.

Other names that have been mentioned include Republicans, Congressman John James and Tudor Dixon, who lost last time to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is term limited.

Duggan is expected to get the backing of some big business people in Metro Detroit. Benson has had an alliance with Stephen Ross, a real estate investor and owner of the Miami Dolphins football team, who is a big donor to the University of Michigan. Forbes list him as being worth more than $18 billion.
