Crain's: Some Big-Name Donors Who Have Maxed Out in the Gubernatorial Race

Crain's Detroit Business reports on some big names who have maxed out with $8,325 donations for the 2026 gubernatorial campaign. Of course, we should note that the donors can give as much as they want to Political Action Committees for the candidates.

Duggan

Independent candidate, Mayor Mike Duggan, who has raised $3.2 million since Jan. 1. Here's some of the notables who have maxed out at $8,325:

Former Michigan Republican Party Chairman and University of Michigan regent Ron Weiser (he also gave to Republican John James)

Ex-Michigan GOP Co-chair Jeff Sakwa.

Compuware co-founder and chairman of MadDog Technology Peter Karmanos Jr. (according to Metro Times)

CEO of MadDog Technology Danialle Karmanos.

Penske Corp. founder and Chairman Roger Penske.
Attorney and U-M regent Mark Bernstein

JACK Entertainment Chairman Matt Cullen

Detroit Pistons executive Arn Tellem

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has $3.5 million since Jan. 1, including a $1.1 million-plus transfer from her secretary of state committee:

Billionaire and Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross.

Sterling Group founder and Chairman of Huntington Bank Gary Torgow.

Billionaire financier George Soros and his son Alex.

James

John James raised almost $2.3 million since April 8, including $750,000 from his congressional committee:

Suburban Collection Holdings Chairman David Fischer

DP Fox Ventures CEO Dan DeVos (who, with his wife Pamella, also gave $5 million to a pro-James super PAC)

Cox

Mike Cox raised: $1.4 million since Jan. 1, including $500,000 loaned by Cox.

Compuware co-founder  and Chairman of MadDog Technology Peter Karmanos Jr.
