Tax revenue from sports betting and online gaming linked to Detroit’s three casinos is playing a key role in helping pay for police officers, firefighters, road plowing, and a host of other basic services for the city of Detroit, Louis Aguilar of The Detroit News reports.
The News reports that the revenue is the second-highest source of income for the city, behind income tax.
For the first five months of Detroit’s fiscal year, from July to November, the city collected $133 million in overall wagering tax revenue.
