Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, who recently dropped out of the governor's race, was nominated Sunday by Michigan Democrats at the state convention at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit to run for Secretary of State, The Detroit News reports.

He'll square off in November against Republican nominee Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini.

Instead of a primary, party delegates elect the Secretary of State nominee at the annual state convention.

Gilchrist beat out Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum and former lottery commissioner Suzanna Shkreli. He was considered a favorite going into the convention.

"I am so proud to accept your endorsement to be the Democratic nominee for secretary of state for the great state of Michigan," Gilchrist told delegates at the state convention in Detroit on Sunday, according to The News.
